All You Good People

When this website went up I promised myself not to post anything “political”. This isn’t political it’s moral. I won’t go on. I could. But if I have anything to say at all (you be the judge), I say it best when I make it rhyme, give it meter and set it to music.  So here is my first and, I hope, my only exception. I hope I’m never compelled to do this again. Thanks.

All You Good People

Kent Agee

Come all you good people who sing Rock of Ages

And stand for the red white and blue

Who preach about justice and family and country

And say you honor the brave and the true

Let’s talk about this man who shouts from the mountain

And calls himself savior but cares about no-one

And teaches you hate for the unholy other

Who dare disagree, whether neighbor or brother

And paints himself gold as an unfeeling idol

And boasts he could kill and the flock would still follow

And fondles the flag like he’s groping a woman

And holds up the Bible like he’s never seen one

And tears down the ally who dare criticize him

And thinks he’s above any jury that tries him

Who’s faith is in lying, who’s religion is money

Who dismisses your dying ‘cause his doctors come running

If you think that I’m wrong, if you have any doubt

Tell me how did you know who I’m singing about?
