Break it down now!
After recording my album, “The Meteorite”, I also wanted to do piano-vocal versions of two of the songs. I had already played the album in live shows a few times as guitar-vocals so I knew the sparser versions not only worked but, in a way, brought a different kind of life to the songs. Don’t get me wrong, everyone who played on the record is a phenomenal musician, and there’s nothing I like more than riding the wave of a band or making a record that is best played loud, but once you feel confident with doing a song solo everything, including adding players, gets easier and more meaningful.
I wanted piano-vocals of “Disintegrate” and “I’ve Been There”. I thought they had real potential to be pitched to other artists and simpler recordings would allow someone to hear the songs in their own voice or with different production.
I hired Tim Lauer, a brilliant, multi-talented musician and producer (not to mention a great person and good friend), to record piano tracks in his studio and send them to me, so I could record vocals at my place.
I’m really happy with how they turned out. Some people may even like them better than the “bigger” versions on the record. That’s ok. Here they are.
